My News: I Have an AGENT!

WooHOOOO! Snoooopy dance! Colorful confetti and neon streamers falling from the sky! An overabundance of exclamation marks!!!

Okay, now that I've gotten that out of my system (sorta), I can be more professional. Ahem.

I am pleased to announce that I am now represented by the fantastic Kelly Sonnack of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency!

Kelly has offered me agent representation based on my YA light sci-fi novel, SHAPERS.

GETTING THERE
Some stats. However, keep in mind that every writer's journey is different, some longer and some shorter.

1. SHAPERS is the 14th novel I've written.
2. I've logged a total of 10 years of writing. I wrote for 8 years in the 1990s, stopped for 10 years while being a single working mother, and started up again in 2009.
3. I've racked up over 350 rejection letters. I've lost count, really. *shrug*
4. This summer I experimented with a print-on-demand book rather than shelving it, but being traditionally published was always my primary goal.
5. I began querying SHAPERS in June 2010. I received 10 rejections and 3 requests for fulls.
6. I initially met Kelly at an SCBWI Oregon retreat (2010), where she critiqued a sample chapter of SHAPERS, along with a synopsis.

I look forward to working with Kelly and Andrea Brown Literary, working on revising the novel for publication. She is personable as well as knowledgeable!

YOUR TURN
How long have you been writing?
How's your rejection slip collection coming along?
Where are you in the journey to publication--writing, editing, querying, agented, on submission, awaiting publication release date, or published?

  2. Congratulations, Carol! That is such a great agency to be part of. I wish you the best moving forward.

I've only been writing seriously for less than two years, so I have yet to receive my first rejection. I look forward to the day, haha! I'm in the final three chapters of my W.I.P. Ideally, I would like to spend the summer editing, and begin querying this fall. We'l see.

    Congratulations, again! Awesome news!

  9. I have been writing full-time for seven months and I am in the final chapters, like my man Paul, with editing as a go.

I have yet to submit for this book.

I have however submitted a query for a childrens picture book. I am waiting.

As you know, I'm impressed by how many books you've written (I'm workin on my 4th) and I'm impressed by your number of rejections. I love that you didn't give up (even though you paused for 10 years).

  23. Congrats!!! And I absolutely love the premise of your book!

  24. Congratulations, Carol! I'm loving the sound of your premise, it's definitely a novel way of looking at the ethics of encouraging weight loss in new and dangerous ways and exploring the idea of what constitutes a person's identity. Also, 14 novels? Seriously impressive, to say nothing of building your editing and analysis skills on the blog. Let's just say I'm not surprised you're agented!

  27. Congratulations!! And, SHAPERS sounds really cool.

I've been writing seriously for over two years, and I've had some short stories published in that time. No novels quite ready for submission yet.

    ReplyDelete
  28. OMG! Super huge congrats, Carol! When you mentioned an agent the other day, I just knew you had to get repped - you are the queen editor! And your story sounds really neat. I'm so happy for you!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Woooo! So awesome! Congratulations!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Congratulations! SHAPERS sounds like a really cool novel. I'll definitely pick it up when it comes out. So you started querying last June? Wow. Determination really paid off! I'll have to remember this when I'm putting together my list of potential rejectors (too negative?). Congrats again!

    ReplyDelete
  31. WOW Super congrats! I hear the Andrea Brown Agency is one of those holy grails. They were mynumber one choice when I queried my first middle grade project.

This is painful. I have been writing since I was 12, I wrote my first novel the summer before 6th grade. I started my first book series that same year. I have written 30 novels and 1 novella. I am 27 now.

I have no idea how many rejections I have, and I sit here, I am too big of coward to go look. ;) It isn't as many as yours, but that goes back to me being a coward.

Right now, I am querying one project, editing another, and getting one book ready for e-book. I am also jumping into a first draft of another book though, I don't like working on more than three things at a time lol

    ReplyDelete
  32. Congrats! You're standing where a lot of us would like to be now. I wish you the best. If anything, writing 14 books is a good sign that your writing flows with ease.

  33. Huge congrats this is fantastic news...

    Way to go.
P.S. Found you on twitter. :)

I'm so so excited for you, and wow you deserve it! You do so much to give back, and what a long road to get where you want to be. SUper inspiring to us, who are still in the fray.
I just finished my 6th novel and have queried the first 5 off and on since 2009. When I start to get disappointed, I write a new story and query that. So one of these days, one of my stories is going to resonate. (i hope) You are inspiration never to give up!

  56. That is absolutely fantastic news! I came across your blog via Lynda R. Youngs. Congrats!!

  58. CAROL!

Massive massive congrats! That's fantastic! I love the sound of SHAPERS, too. Great concept!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Congrats! I love to hear good news. Here are my stats: I wrote several books in the 90s and sent out a few stories, got a few rejections, a few hits. I went back to school and started up again seriously in 2007. Since then, I've written two books I love, but I've only sent out a few queries, hence only a few rejections. I'm not very confident in myself yet.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Heard about your success from Lynda. Congratulations! How wonderful! And thanks for sharing your story and your query.

I've been writing seriously for 3 years. Sprucing up my first novel to go back out in the query mill.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wow. 14 novels and 350 rejections on this one? Ouch. Puts me in my place! Thank you for sharing that! I can now return to regularly scheduled programming sans the whine. LOL You have my utter respect.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Just came over from Lynda Young's blog.

What a premise. No wonder you were offered representation.

Thanks for sharing your stats. I just completed my 6th manuscript. I give up on each one after about 30 or so rejections. I keep track, but have been too wimpy to count 'em. When I get representation I'll add them up.

I'm so happy for you. YaY! Congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  63. FYI for anyone--my 350 rejections were not all from my 14 novels. I wrote a bunch of children's short stories and picture-book-length stories in my first 8 years of writing too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Carol, I just heard! Congrats! I'm so happy for you. And thanks for sharing your inspiring journey. It gives me hope.

  70. Congratulations, Carol! I remember reading your first pages of this novel over at The Mansion. I'm so glad to hear that it landed you an awesome agent!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Congratulations!!! You must be over the moon. I have written two children's adventure novels in a series (Chronicles of the Stone), self-published the first one (The Secret of the Sacred Scarab) after 35 rejections, won lots of book awards/nominations; got rave reviews; one of them was picked up by a UK movie company and I am about to sign a movie option for the first two books. No, I do not have an agent but hope that after the movie deal comes off an army of agents will beat a path to my door...

    ReplyDelete
  72. Reading about your agent success is great. I am struggling with this whole publication process thingie and seeing your success is inspiring.

I have been writing since the 8th grade. I finished my first novel when I was 16.

I am up to about 25 rejections for my serial killer novel. I was spoiled by an instant interest (who later declined) so that has made me impatient.

    Must meditate.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yay Carol! That's so awesome. I love the sound of your book. I can't wait to read it and can't wait until our get together :) Good luck with everything.

Best of luck as you go forward with Kelly!

  83. Hi Carol,

I'm doing my going-through-old-posts thing, seeing as I'm a well intentioned but time poor occasional commenter! And of course in this case it was motivated by reading in your sidebar and twitter profile that you've got an agent. So I may be late to the party, but CONGRATULATIONS! (in my defense I spent most of March and April in hospital and since then have been coping with demands of child number two, so I've been distracted)

Great that you've got your revisions back to her and hope all goes well from here. I find there's still plenty of waiting around on this side of the agent gate...
